This series contains records related to the establishment of the Joint Arctic Weather Station (JAWS) program. The records include correspondence (from the period of 1944 until 1946) between Charles J. Hubbard, Maine Senator Owen Brewster, North Carolina Representative Alfred Lee Bulwinkle, and others about legislation for the creation of weather station in the arctic. Admiral Richard E. Byrd is referenced in the records as well. Included are Hubbard's proposals and notes along with a report on his flight to Melville Island in August 1945 and letters (from 1946) from Margaret Oldenburg containing information about Melville Island obtained during her botanical field work. Also included are documents (from 1946) describing the Arctops Project, initiated under Hubbard, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by the Research Board for National Security of the National Academy of Sciences and chronological notes by Hubbard after he left MIT covering his activities April 5 to May 26, 1946, in establishing the program. Lastly, the files contain reports on the 1946 operation that established a weather station in Thule, Greenland, and on the first year of operation (1946 through 1947) at the Thule station; and a folio of photographs illustrating activities connected with the establishment of the Arctic stations in 1946 until 1948.
